Other Clyde islands easily reached from Largs are the Isle of Bute (ferry from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay) and Isle of Arran (ferry from Ardrossan to Brodick).A cosy second floor apartment located in Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae, with beautiful scenery and lovely beaches. Once ashore, head to Ayr for the Robert Burns Heritage Area, a couple of miles south at Alloway. The Cathedral is open for B&B March-Nov whenever its 16 bedrooms are not being used for groups and retreats, B&B double £90. Also, several self-catering places in Millport. Decent basic hotel, it's your best bet on Cumbrae, dog-friendly.
Firth View Caravan Park, half a mile west of town, has static caravans as self-catering lets, but doesn't have tourer or camping facilities.
Minstrels is a wine bar and restaurant next to the Royal George open daily 12:00-20:30, F Sat to 22:00. Newton Bar on Glasgow St is open daily 11:00-01:00. The Golden Dragon and the Dancing Midge Cafe are both on Millport sea front by Crocodile Rock. Millport Country Music Festival is held at the end of August. Newton Beach in the bay by Millport is sandy and safe. The Catalinas were based at Largs during World War II for Atlantic patrols, and this one made a rough landing and sank in 1943. Don't be alarmed if on the ferry you see people donning scuba diving kit: they're planning to dive onto the Catalina flying boat next to Cumbrae Slip. A bike circuit of the island is 11 miles along quiet, level roads.Walk up to the island's highest point, the Glaid Stone at 127 m, for views over the Firth of Clyde.Specimens are caught by students and are returned to the sea after three weeks in the aquarium.
